An interview with Toni Martínez Cardenete of the Galaxy Team

Name: Toni Martínez Cardenete
Age: I am 37 years old.
Social communication contact data: facebook twitter youtube

Where are you from? I was born and lived in Barcelona but for many years I have lived in the Delta del Ebro.

Any blog that writes or social media? I have my blog www.monteypesca.wordpress.com, I write fishing articles on the Coto de pezca website and I am on social networks, because when they are used they are a great tool for dissemination.

What kayaks do you use? I have an Alboran of Galaxy Kayaks, a perfect kayak to fish whatever the chosen fishing modality.

When did fishing begin and how did you get involved in that?

Many years ago. The gang was very small looking for irrigation rafts looking for tents, barbels and colorful carpines that we fished with putty and the first bass with worm. Little by little I was growing and my interest in fishing and other species increased and I started fishing deep in the sea and with teaspoons, vinyls and rapalas in fresh water. Little by little we have been specializing, gaining experience and even today.

How long have you been fishing from a kayak?

About five years Before fishing from the Alboran I did it from my brother's whitewater kayak, small but manageable, which got me into the worm in order to specialize more with the subject of kayak fishing. With the Alboran I have been fishing since this summer 2015.

Tell us about your most memorable fishing experience:

They have been many, but I always keep with affection and nostalgia some of those old days of fishing after the anjovas to spinning in the delta, when nobody used poppers, minnows or any other decoy. They were only fished thoroughly and curried. With the first poppers that began to be commercialized (which were hard to find) and with the largest minnows we could find I had with my father, memorable days in terms of chopped and fighting with many large specimens in many kilos.

Do you have favorite places to fish?

The Ebro delta where I live continues to keep me awake. In the sea I stay with Cabo de Gata in Almeria, and the Balearic Islands like Ibiza and Formentera, amazing for fishing. In fresh water I love fishing in reservoirs such as Mequinenza-Caspe, Ribarroja, Canelles and Santa Ana. The rivers and lakes of the Pyrenees are other places where I miss many days throughout the year.

What type of fishing do you prefer?

No doubt the spinning, although the fly I have quite forgotten and is an exciting way. The surfcasting is another modality that I have practiced and even from time to time I dedicate some day.

Do you have some preferred brands of fishing gear? (rod, reel, decoy, etc.)?

As for rods and reels I trust Shimano a lot, but other brands like Daiwa, Herakles, Hart or Lucky Craft have very good teams. As for decoys I like to try novelty material and fishing with lures from very different brands, apart from that I collaborate with some brands in terms of decoy tests. I'll definitely stick with Seaspin, Lucky Craft, YKR, DUO, Daiwa, Roshi and Savagear, along with some classics like Rapala.

What's in your decoy box now?

I always carry a bit of everything, depending on the dates and predators to look for, although fishing in the Ebro delta, well does one go well armed in different lures since in what areas and times one does not know what surprises you can find yourself on the fishing day. Of course, right now we are leaving a lot behind sea bass to top water, which can not miss a box with a variety of walkers.

Which fish do you like the most?

In the sea I love the anjova, the bonito and the barracuda, but the llampuga takes the cake. In fresh water I prefer any salmonid.

What advice would you give someone new to kayak fishing?

The most basic is that is willing to live new experiences and challenges, the rest comes alone. You have to be in good shape and take into account the physical limitations of each and safety. Choose the ideal kayak for the types of fishing practiced and the fishing areas. And that has a great respect and be responsible with the environment, since fishing from kayak is a healthy lifestyle and responsible, a must.

If I could fish anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Right now to Norway, to fish for cod and halibut among other species. Or was it to Alaska, after pike, salmon and charcoal ...? ;)

Do you have some people that you admire in this sport?

To my father, from whom we learned many fishing things together. To my partner who shares with me the hours of spinning with the same or more passion than me. And in general I admire all those who share their hobby with passion and without envy.

What would be your 5 tips for fishing?

  1. Have a lot of tenacity.
  2. Respect for the natural environment
  3. Soak up every second, since even the worst days are learned.
  4. Let go of selfishness and greed.
  5. Always carry a camera with photos and / or video.
